Our Advent series continues. Advent, from the Latin adventus, means “coming.” All of those activities are intended to point us to a Person. Advent is ultimately about adoring Jesus, the perfect Son of God.

It is fascinating, then, to examine Jesus’ genealogy in Matthew. There are five women mentioned among the predominantly male list – Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, “the wife of Uriah” (also known as Bathsheba), and Mary. We might expect these women to be pristine and perfect, since the Son of God is who He is. We would be wrong. Each of them leading up to Mary had messy, challenging lives. What great news! God uses messy, challenging people like these women, and like us. Join us as we study these “misfit mothers of Jesus.” On Sunday, December 11th we learn about how Bathsheba was taken advantage of by David, experienced grief and sorrow and loss as a result. Yet, she became the queen mother of Solomon and one of the women in the Savior’s line, the Savior that everyone needs, most especially including King David himself.
