Kairos Cookie Collection
The Kairos Prison Ministry at Marion Correctional Facility conducts a Kairos Weekend at the prison twice a year. Typically, 42 inmates participate in the three-day weekend. It is based on the Cursillo or Emmaus Walk weekend experience – a short course in Christianity. Many give their lives to Christ.
The next Kairos Weekend at Marion Correctional Institution will be held October 23 through October 26. This is a powerful time, for lives change when prison inmates experience the love and forgiveness that is found in Jesus Christ.
Any Cursillo or Emmaus weekend is a lot of work, but in the prison setting it is massive undertaking. Because there can be no trace of favoritism, they need to give cookies to ALL of the inmates – not just the ones participating. Thus, they need 4,000 DOZEN cookies!
Thank you for baking cookies for the upcoming Kairos weekend. Cookies show inmates that there are people who think of them and care about them. Here is the most important thing: As you bake, please pray for the inmates, corrections officers, prison staff and the Kairos volunteers.
A Kairos Weekend is a living expression of the body of Christ. Some engage directly with the residents all weekend, others work behind the scenes. Some give talks, some lead discussion groups, and the musicians lead us in worship and praise.
The prisoners are always humbled and amazed that people would bake cookies not only for the men experiencing the Kairos Weekend, but also for each person in the prison. And prayer is simply foundational. Perhaps one day we will understand the role our prayers played in changing these men’s lives. If so, it’ll be amazing.
A few of the testimonies shared at the “open mic” session at the closing ceremony during the October Kairos weekend:
- “I’ve been lost for a long time. I’ve looked for reasons to hate people. I used to have 100 reasons to be angry and not a single reason not to be. Now I have 100 reasons not to be angry. I’ve put up walls, but I can’t do that anymore.”
- “I’ve always believed in God, but I didn’t think he could love me because of all the things I’ve done. Now I know he does.”
- “I didn’t think I deserved the time I got in my sentence, but God knew what he was doing.” [This was an expression of gratitude for having experienced Kairos.]
